Best Universities in the World
Drawing from data provided by Thomson Reuters and input from leading educational figures from 15 different countries, the British education magazine Times Higher Education (THE) has compiled a list of the top 200 universities in the world. The magazine based its rankings on five main categories, which emerged from performance indicators that cover a range of university activities, including research, teaching and transferring knowledge to the community. The categories are:
- Research: Volume, reputation and income
- Teaching: Learning environment
- Industry income: Innovation
- Citations: Research influence
- International mix: Diversity of students and staff
Based on these measures, American universities dominated the top of the list. The top 5 are Harvard University, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and Princeton University.
